Cause of death: the autopsy
A study found about 6 million suspected fake stars across 18,617 repos, so the problem is real, but at least 8 free detectors exist and both investor-facing web checkers were registered in April 2026, which killed it under its pre-set test. The paid one, StarForensic at $49 per 30 days, showed only 11 of 50 founding slots claimed about 5 months after launch.
