Cause of death: the autopsy
The free API returned a 3-week-old rate (1.9% off) with no error, its third stall of 2026, and a popular open-source bookkeeping app used it by default. But free current substitutes exist and the fix is a URL swap plus a date check. Pre-registered kill line hit.
