Cause of death: the autopsy
Publisher left Microsoft 365 on 1 Oct 2026 and questions were rising, but three new .pub tools registered between June and August 2026, one a $49 one-time desktop app with batch mode, joining Markzware at $10 a file. It's a one-off purchase, and users mostly asked for PDF, which Publisher exports for free. Killed on supply.
